The third working meeting of the Democracy Study Centre

The third DSC working meeting took place in the Conference Hall of the Centre for Children in Need “Our Kids” on January 28-29, 2017.

The 29 fellows from Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine, including 2 senior researchers and 4 research fellows are participating in the pilot project of the Democracy Study Centre. The 8-months project assembles students, PhD candidates, and civil society activists once a month with an aim to build capacities of civil societies while encouraging critical and interdisciplinary work of young scholars and the sustainable development of networks and partnerships in post-soviet countries. Each monthly working meeting implies the socio-political discussion with high-level speakers from political, economic, academic and media spheres. Such debates between the students and the speakers form the DSC’s cornerstone.

The third meeting has begun on Saturday with the Inspiring breakfast with Tamila Tasheva, a co-founder of the CrimeaSOS NGO and finished on Sunday with Mustafa Nayyem, Member of Parliament of Ukraine, Ukrainian journalist and public figure. Tamila Tasheva focused on Crisis Management issues, while Mustafa Nayyem focused on the role of young leaders in state development.

Alexandru Musteata, the DSC scholar (Moldova), shared his experience with fighting against corruption in Moldova. He focused on the role of the civil society.

Mariia Symonova, a Clean Universities anti-corruption campaign manager, EaP CSF UNP working group coordinator, member of the Reanimation Package of Reforms during the workshop shared her experience with Civil Society Organisation management and focused on fighting against corruption in Ukrainian universities.

A significant part of the time was assigned to the study of social entrepreneurship with explanations of different ways of doing business by Jacek Wojciechowicz, Chief Advisor at the German-Polish-Ukrainian Society.

A Very exciting meeting took place with Marieluise Beck, a German politician and member of the Alliance ’90/The Greens group in the Bundestag, member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Marieluise Beck focused on the Eastern European affairs.

Meeting with His Excellency Roman Waschuk, the Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine was dedicated to discussing the role of diplomacy in international affairs.
